Palm trees can be successfully grown from seed but palm seeds have a long gestation period. Kentia's for example can take between 2-3 years before sending up shoots.

Most palms grow in tropical or warm climates so if you live in a cold place then you are probably thinking that you can't grow palm tress! How ever you would be only partly right as most palms can not grow in temperatures less then 15 degrees but a couple of varieties will survive cold temperatures down to -6 and grow as tall as 15 feet so check out this site before you think that your garden is to cold for a palm.

So you have just come back from a beautiful tropical country or have lived in a country where palm trees where common and now you want to grow a palm to remind you of the fantastic time you had or maybe you just love palms and want to try and grow your own? So where do you start?

Garden containers are also a great pick me up for when you are feeling down. With so many colorful patterns, shapes & sizes, you can't help but smile when looking at a beautiful selection of decorative pots filled with yummy herbs, delicious vegetables, colorful flowers or maybe all in one pot! grown by your fair hands.

First do you want to grow your palm from seed? or are you looking for a ready grown palm that you can plant straight into your garden?

Dependant on your climate a palm can grow fairly quickly or quite slow so growing one from seed in a colder climate might take a lot more time then you think. Plus palm seeds have a

long gestation period which can be as long as 3 years which means that you won't even see any progress for the first 3 years! Therefore buying a pre grown palm might be the best solution for adding instant tropics to your garden. If you are adamant that you want to grow a palm from seed then remove the fleshy coverings and soak the seed in tepid water for at least 24 hours. Discard any that are still floating after this period and plant the ones that have sunk to the bottom. Plant the palm seeds in a good seed-raising mix and keep warm in a greenhouse or on a window sill.

Most palms are relatively maintenance free and whilst they do not require pruning they do require you to remove the spent fronds in order to keep it looking nice and a weekly feed of water.

Palms need iron, magnesium, manganese and potassium in order to stay healthy so finding a fertilizer that contains these nutrients will help keep your palm tree fit and healthy.

If you live in a warm climate then you can plant baby palms directly into your garden but if you live in a region where you get strong frosts then it is recommended that you start your young palms of inside or in a green house to protect them from the frost and then transplant them into your garden when they are bigger and stronger. To keep your palm warm in winter wrap the trunk with newspaper and cover this with a plastic sheeting to protect from the rain and throw down lots of mulch to protect the roots.

Palms can be transplanted provided that most of the root ball can be kept intact and this is best done during early spring (their growing season). Transplant your palm into a hole twice the size of the root ball and water continuously for the first month or so.
